The New Year is here and many of us are as busy and active as ever. This is the time of year where it is customary for Vancouver entrepreneurs to make resolutions with the intention of achieving each and every last one of them. Resolutions (i.e. goal setting) are especially important if you want to improve your business’ marketing and processes, customer relationships and company revenue (and even find overall satisfaction in life, which the majority of us want – more on that in a future post).
So here is what you need to know in terms of keeping your resolutions and achieving your goals.
You may have heard this before, but I cannot reiterate enough the value and importance of goal setting. You see, the most successful men and women of yesterday and today got there because they had a dream, a vision, a goal. It may have been something as deliberate and major as, “I will not settle until I have $100,000 cash in my bank account,” to small milestones such as, “I want to create a new program and offering” or “I want to expand my touch points and reach more people”.
I personally use goal setting extensively and the first thing I learn about from my coaching clients, when it comes to business and marketing, are what they think their goals are. Proper goal setting is important because to do it right means that some thought about the overall scale and process of the business is needed and that is a good thing. I also find that the more you think about where your company is and what/where it could be, the more that train of thought opens up other possibilities that you may not have thought of previous. The point of entrepreneurial goal setting is really to inspire you, now, isn’t it?
So without further adieu, here are some guidelines I use when I set goals:
Start your major goal setting at significant times during the year. The start of the year is an obvious time, but I also revisit and reassess my goals quarterly. I break apart everything that I have been doing and set new step goals to reach my overall goal at these times.
You need to have an overall goal for each pursuit in your life, be it business, health, or relationships. This goal can be as grand as you want and it should be just out of your reach, yet something you believe is possible. And you must believe in the goal, that it can be a reality for you. In the end, you may not reach your goal, but because you set the bar so high, you would have taken yourself further than you would have gone otherwise.
Having an overall goal which you feel positive about to strive for is important to your success. An example would be to build out a process for handling customers, on paper, so you can teach other people how to do it for you. Another example could be to develop marketing that attracts people into your prospect funnel in a way that creates trust and comfort, so you don’t always have to chase after that sale, which has always created anxiety for you in the past. Whatever your overall goal is, make it a lofty goal.
In the next part, we’ll talk specifically on how to do this using Step Goals.
