Do you have an inner or outer scorecard? Meaning do you make your own decisions when it comes to life and business or are you heavily influenced by other people?
There is a psychological concept called the locus of control, where if you have an internal locus of control, you don’t care what people think and you make your decisions independently. You are responsible for your own actions, including your failures, and you have the weight of the world on your shoulders as you strive to succeed on your own terms.
If you have an external locus of control, you tend to change your mind a lot depending on what you hear and what people say, and there is always a reason why you didn’t make it, why it’s anyone’s fault but your own, why the world is so unfair.
Another way to ask the question is do you play the role of Victor or Victim in your life?
As a business owner, it’s ideal to have an inner scorecard, where you see problems as challenges and are in control of your reality, rather than have an external scorecard where you think you’re a victim of circumstance and make excuses.
If you are the latter, don’t despair, you can develop yourself to the former through maturity, experience, education, and success. Getting help and feedback will also enable you to speed up that process.
