One way to demonstrate your expertise to your ideal audience (i.e. your probable clients) is to be relevant to the concerns at the top of your audience’s mind.
This means you should be sharing and commenting on the latest news in your industry, particularly if there is a lot of volatile movement in the media about the latest developments.
Why? For two reasons:
- Because this makes you easier to find via search engines and word of mouth. Not only are you part of the conversation, if you are clever, you actually create the conversation.
- And because this makes you the expert, and thus the obvious choice when it comes to finding a solution to your audience’s problem.
Let’s take the example of Financial Services as a case study.
If you are in financial services, either as financial advisor, real estate agent, mortgage broker, or anything in between, you should have been blogging on your Personal Blogging Website about what’s been going on in the Canadian economy since March. You would have built up so much content and credibility that today you would be a major figure in your industry. A mere four months later.
For example, News1130 released this report at the beginning of May: (Article) “B.C. has one of the hottest housing markets in Canada”, yet the housing market has been in such contention over the past few month, and continues to be top of home buyer’s mind, that your idea audience is hungry for your advice on what to do.
Your clients are asking if prices will go up? Will they go down? (Incidentally, I call bubble, so I think they will this year). What about mortgage rates and the HST? You should be sharing everything you know about all these topics and be the savior in your client’s minds.
A few months is all it takes for you to position yourself as the expert in all these areas and have clients knocking on your door, rather than you having to scramble to make the next sale.
If you haven’t been promoting yourself adequately until now, don’t despair, there’s still as the Bank of Canada expected to announce a new, higher interest rate tomorrow that is sure to create a domino effect that will ripple throughout the Canadian economy in the weeks to come. And lest not forget about the HST (Hated Sales Tax).
The question you should be asking yourself right now, regardless of what business or industry you’re in is how good a job have you been doing at communicating your expertise to your audience and making yourself the obvious choice?
